Questioning Beliefs
Vijay TV, the tamil channel has a programme Nadandhadhu Enna? Weekdays at night 10pm. I used to see the program advertisements and not see that program as the things being discussed were like Crude Religious practices followed or some crude gimmicks done. Yesterday's program did not seem to contain any such crude events so I watched it for first 15 minutes.
It was about how a light glows in Tender Cocunt. There is a place in a village called nooru one samimalai, where a rishi performed his prayers. They say there is a lamp in that place where it glows when you pour Tender Cocunt water in the lamp and no oil. These guys from vijay TV went to enquire and saw it happen in real and came out. And they had doubts on whether it was real or not.
They thought it might be done by having the thread immersed in ghee or oil. And said that is how it is glowing. The problem is they did not ask the villagers if this was so. They did not try to touch and feel or smell the thread to ascertain its truth. They assumed something, made a statement and proceeded with the show. They said this is a small gimmick which might be true or untrue. Now if this is a small gimmick why go there, and if it could be either way why try and propose some theory. Was the gimmick from the villagers side or was the gimmick from Vijay TV's side.
If a programme doesnt attempt to clarify and find out the reality then it should not have questioned it in the first place. This is like casting aspersions on someone's character with no validity or proof required. They can manage to just question a beleif without any opposition. I am not saying science is wrong and religion is correct, but to me and to many beleivers like me, religion is right unless proved wrong. If you cannot prove something scientifically and settle a question, then dont throw some theory just to satisfy non-beleivers.
