The hindu - Partisan on the EC
The First Page news on Hindu about CEC's recommendation to remove(sack) Navin chawla was loaded. the Paper conveyed the news with its opinions and ever since have systematically tried and even convinced people that Mr.Gopalswami was wrong in making suo-motto recommendation.
It is strange that the magazine will go so far to get opinions from every Leading advocate against the CEC's views, and not a single view supporting the CEC ever got published. It was as if The Hindu was a personal PR for Navin Chawla. Now the magazine might be right in its interpetation of the law and its motives. But why does it ignore the other side of the equation.
It says the CEC has to wait for the government to ask for a recommendation. And the government(or the party running it) and Mr.Navin chawla are the people being accused of partisanship. How do we expect Congress government to refer to the CEC on this issue. Shouldnt the magazine also ask why the delay in government even conducting an enquiry on the pettition for sacking Mr.Navin Chawla.
The Hindu comfortably ignored Mr.Gopalswami's suggestions of not giving government posts to ECs after retirement for 10 years etc which was for ensuring a non-partisan Election commision. It rather attacked the CEC as if he was a BJP stooge, never once questioning if Navin Chawla was the Congress's Stooge. The Hindu expertly went around picking holes in timings, Processes, and called the CEC's action unjustified, almost a repeat of the trial by media as was done in 26/11. It is strange that a paper which advocated that media should not interfere and pass on judgements in 26/11 case curiously passed on judgements in the Election Commision issue. Why didnt it allow the news to be available as it is. Whenever this news was covered Mr.N.Ram found the need to mention the inappropriateness of the CEC action.
Let us take the example of the nuclear deal. Doesnt the law clearly state that the executive will sign deals and make decisions. There was no law to bring a international treaty signed to the Parliament. But it steadfastly supported left's request to discuss the nuclear deal in the Parliament and even vote on it. Wasnt it against procedures, wasnt it something that the forefathers of our consitution did not want us to do. Wouldnt it mean encroachment of Legislative into the judiciary. But the magazine felt the need for it to happen for it concerned the sovereignty and security of India they say.
Going by same yardstick, shouldnt we discount process and look into Mr.Gopalswami's allegations, see if it is true and if so sack the Election commisioner based on the CEC's recommendation. for if we fail to do it now, he will become the CEC and can only be impeached which is never going to happen due to the political backing. And we will have a partisan CEC and is that what the magazine is really campaigning for, or have they stooped so low in their pro-left and anti-BJP stances that they will look at everything through that yardstick only.

It's a shame that the only newspaper in the country that's good in quality for general news reporting is unabashedly partisan when it comes to politics.
