Gujarat and our Politics
Most People would expect me to be a stauch supporter of the BJP. But I am probably one person who opposes them more than anyone else. I did like them back in 1998, I thought they were a party with a difference. But then they aligned with the DMK. (Didnt they know they were based on an Anti Hindu Plank from inception). They aligned with anyone opposed to Congress to get to Power. Atal Behari Vajpayee symbolised to me all that was wrong with Indian Politics. Power Hunger, Development of one's family (That too a foster family never heard of), self pity (look at his speeches in parliament, I have been in opposition benches for 45 years, now I am in power, I am old etc), lies (Mentions he will start urdu schools in lucknow during a poll campaign, after 6 years of power when he never thought of such an idea). I disliked the BJP for all these ills. I could expect these from Congress but this was a party with a difference, to be deceived back into a similar realm was not good.
With all this opposition to BJP in my heart now I should be hoping for a congress victory in Gujarat. But I dont. I rather expect the BJP to win there, because Narendra Modi does seem different. I know the congress will ruin any thing left in that state if it comes to power. Narendra Modi does seem to work on a development plank. And for once there will be a powerful leader in a state who does care about the development of his state. But I wouldnt want them to win with the majority they had in the previous elections. That would mean total power and total authority which brings a risk. The readiness to destroy any opposition. There should be a good representaton for an opposition for a democracy to function. For that I hope the congress does perform well in the state.
But one thing left a bad taste during this election campaign. I expected Sonia and Modi to do whatever they did. But for Dr.Singh to go in there and campaign against Modi the way he did was unexpected. He has said he wants the states to work for development, and here is one person who is really doing it. From his purely economic agenda he should have understood that Modi's stay in power is good. That divisive party politics could make him to vilify Modi was unexpected. It goes on to show our polity will never unite for any cause. When a Prime Minister and a Chief Minister sling mud at each other it doesnt augur well for the polity.
